CCS Completes Cote D'Ivoire Low Carbon Economic Capacity Building

Abidjan, Côte D’Ivoire, September 2019. The Center for Climate Strategies (CCS) has completed a two-year capacity building process for a team of 25 national modeling experts in Côte D’Ivoire through the Africa Low Emissions Development Strategies (Africa LEDS) Project. This cooperative program was conducted with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development of Côte D’Ivoire with support from the European Commission, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the LEDS Global Partnership and the Africa LEDS Partnership. It was designed for development and implementation of new low emissions development measures in all sectors that improve social, economic and environmental conditions and contribute to Nationally Determined Contributions.

The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Krieger School of Arts and Sciences held a day long symposium hosted by the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) at its auditorium in Washington, DC to review Multidisciplinary Approaches to Climate Change through the eyes of the private sector, civil society, government, university experts, and the public. The event culminated more than a year of planning and preparation by interdisciplinary programs of JHU.

National Economic Planning in Cote D'Ivoire

Through the Africa Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) Project, the Center for Climate Strategies (CCS) is providing technical training and tool development for national modeling teams in West Africa, including Cote D’Ivoire. This includes support for the development and use of an integrated modeling framework for low carbon development impact analysis, and the use of macroeconomic modeling as part of this system for design and evaluation of integrated programs to meet national economic, energy, and environmental goals. To support Cote D’Ivoire and emerging nations, CCS has developed a Macroeconomic Indicators Tool to accelerate socio economic planning and analysis. The Cote d’Ivoire national modeling team will be applying the tool on a national waste-to energy pilot project.

West Africa, March, 2019. As part of its Africa program, The Center for Climate Strategies (CCS) is supporting Low Carbon Financing Programs with partners in Ghana. CCS moderated a discussion of the Investment Forum at the Africa Climate Week in Accra in Ghana on its Private Investment Mobilization Project, implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Following the Investment Forum, the Ghana local technical team engaged with CCS in an interactive training session on design of financial mechanisms as part of the curriculum.

Results of gap analysis conducted by the Center for Climate Strategies (CCS) is in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) of Lebanon show that many Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) related activities are underway by the Government of Lebanon across ministries and third-party institutions. With enhancement and expansion, they can improve national objectives for fiscal, macroeconomic, investment, energy security, environmental sustainability, and equity gains.

Private Investment Mobilization Curriculum and Pilot

Accra, Ghana – In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and its NDC Support Programme, the Center for Climate Strategies (CCS) launched a multi-year incubation training and pilot program in Ghana to mobilize investments for standardized and aggregated projects that meet global climate stabilization and national sustainable development goals (SDGs). This is the first in a series of national pilot programs for private investment mobilization to support low carbon development and climate stabilization in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

COP24 and the World Climate Summit

Katowice, Poland. At the World Climate Summit and Investor COP hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Center for Climate Strategies (CCS) joined experts from the Climate Policy Initiative and governments of Denmark and Nigeria to share strategies and lessons for acceleration of low carbon actions through heightened participation of the private sector. CCS shared examples of its framework and tools for private sector inclusion and policy and product development as they have been operationalized and replicated in Africa, Asia, and Latin America as well as results from recent launch of its Private Investment Mobilization Project in Ghana, and findings from collaboration in South China.

CCS Macroeconomic Assessment of New Guatemala Policies

CCS presented a draft macroeconomic indicators assessment of 43 Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) policies designed to expand national economic growth and jobs through the USAID/Guatemala Low Emission Development Project. Policies in all sectors were developed through intensive screening and analysis over a two-year collaborative process involving over 300 stakeholders. Each LEDS action was designed to promote sustainable economic development while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting forests and biodiversity, and enhancing energy security.

This affiliate event featured leadership and lessons learned from the China Subnational LCD program over the past decade, followed by introduction of the new framework for engagement in Southeast Asia through discussion with high-level representatives from China, and other countries. CCS, GEI, CAS-ISD, and GIEC co-hosted and facilitated announcement of the new program and discussion of the format for BRI and CSSC cooperation and the process by which participating nations can further develop and implement their NDC’s and improve financing and other implementation capacities through this program.
