CCS and USAID Partners Launch Ukraine LEDS Action Plan Process

Kiev, April 22, 2016. The Municipal Energy Reform Project of US AID and its multinational project team, including IRG (a wholly owned subsidiary of Engility Corporation) The Center for Climate Strategies (CCS), and other collaborators, announced the launch of the Ukraine Low Emissions Development Strategies (LEDS) Action Plan process to implement Post Paris UNFCCC commitments as well as Ukrainian national goals for regional integration, economic growth, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.

At the Government of Ukraine Press Briefing, CCS CEO and President Tom Peterson noted:

"The Paris Agreement calls for clear initial steps by all nations to stabilize emissions through national commitments that reverse the trajectory of dangerous climate interference and expand international cooperation on actions and investments of global benefit. By pursuing Paris goals through highly integrated LEDS approaches that enable economic development and energy goals, it also builds willpower and ambition for stronger, strategic actions needed to place Ukraine and other nations on a path for prosperity and security that also reduces global climate threats."

On April 21, 2016 the Ukraine LEDS Action Plan process was launched through the 25 member Ministerial Working Group and more than 100 representatives of government, citizens, and the private sector. After two years of preparation, it builds on significant progress already taken by Ukraine to cut emissions, save energy, and expand economic and investment growth, and aims to elevate and accelerate cohesive national responses to these challenges. Through domestic leadership, expert assistance, and new international cooperation, we look forward to acting quickly and effectively to charter a path for Ukraine and provide an example for emerging economies in the region and world.
