CCS and African Delegation Discuss Decarbonization Approaches and Cases

Arianna Ugliano of CCS joins representatives of African nations and the US State Department for discussion of net zero development approaches and examples.

Washington DC, February 28, 2023. In cooperation with the US State Department, the Center for Climate Strategies (CCS) led a dialog session with a delegation of 14 African countries on approaches for national decarbonization planning, analysis, and implementation. The meeting was hosted by the US State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and included representatives from African governmental institutions, academia, and civil society gathered in Washington DC.

CCS showcased work it has done in many regions of the world, including Africa, Asia, South America, and Eastern Europe. The discussion focused on templates for national and subnational development of net zero climate change goals and long-term strategies that are integrated with near term actions and national priorities, such as least cost energy planning and equitable economic growth. This included review of examples of multi-objective low carbon approaches to climate change through the USAID Rwanda Power Africa project, planning and analysis process through the USAID Guatemala LEDS project, and implementation frameworks through the UNDP Ghana Private investment Mobilization project.

CCS is grateful to the US State Department and the Meridian International Center for the opportunity to share this knowledge and looks forward to seeing this extraordinary group of African delegates to lead climate change work in their countries!
